23/23

First off, I am so glad to be done with this. I honestly do not know which "things" would work best for the library. Test trials would need to be conducted with each networking tool. Facebook seems would be the best has far as getting information to patrons because majority of people (nowadays) have a Facebook. Just a few days I ago I "liked" the Frisco Public Library on Facebook. I checked out a few of the posts and I thought they were exactly what needs to be on there. Example being, it reminded the public that we close early (today, yay!) and will be closed until Monday. Information like that is what people need. Maybe a "note" on Facebook stating we do not take items over the counter except renewals would be nice also ;)

Overall, I thought this activity was just okay. Some things were interesting but most of this stuff, I had already "tested out" and most of it, I do not use at home. It is quite possible that it would be benefical to the library though.

I have used Formspring before... it is kind of a Q&A type of tool. Users can ask questions using their usernames or be anonymous while asking questions. I think it is sort of interesting and I think businesses would benefit from it because it would be a fast way for customers to find information inside of looking for one specific phone number, then getting transfered to speak to another representative, then waiting on hold for 15 minutes. Formspring is just a quick, easy tool to use for people to ask questions and get answers.

I searched lunar eclipse because of the one seen the other night. I liked the way the information was organized (mostly by year) because I could just jump around and see the different images from different eclipses that happened throughout the past years. I honestly love Wikipedia. Although it is not always reliable, there are always sources used at the bottom and most professors will accept those when writing papers :). We could totally make a page about the Frisco Public Library!

P.S. I posted under "Mattito's" and "Sonic on Main" on the library's wiki. These were my comments:
Mattito's: I have always wanted to go here! It looks so colorful and fun. I bet they have good vegetarian options :) Cheese enchiladas are my favorite! Yummm.
Sonic: I agree with Gennifer! Grilled cheese with mayo is the best at Sonic :)

I looked up the National Library of Medicine and I actually thought the podcast that I listened to, "Kids & Social Media"  was very interesting. I only listened to part of the clip but the the quality was excellent. I found it to be very clear. Sometimes, I find audio files to be either too quiet (even when the volume is all the way up) or too loud. I would actually enjoy listening to some more published by the National Library of Medicine especially because that is my field of interest.

I don't ever use Hulu. I feel like they never have shows that I am looking for (kind of like Netflix *coughcough*). I am not sure why the library would use Hulu aside maybe to review ratings or how popular a series was in terms of ordering new tv series. I believe that people are still going to keep buying/checking out DVDs as long as they are still being made. I still buy tv series because I would rather have an actual copy instead of keeping it on my DVR forever.

YouTube use to be really great but ever since it exploded a few years ago, I feel the quality of the website has gone down. I mean I feel sometimes that it is impossible to find a certain song because people post themselves singing it or live-versions (from a concert) when I am just looking for the music video. I just hate that a bunch of garbage gets posted on it. Don't get me wrong, I feel YouTube is a great resource if you can find what you are looking for. I feel the Frisco Public Library could benefit from YouTube, maybe by making a sort of "commerical" to promote us or if we do any type of event, like how the Anime Club gets together. I think these would make good videos to show the public about our library. We could promote the YouTube account via Twitter, Facebook, or just a general email.

Pandora is such an awesome tool to use. Although I hate the commericals and inability to skip certain songs as often as I want, I really enjoy using this music streamer. It will most of the time bring up a bunch of different bands that I really like. Although, I am not sure how this would benefit the Frisco Public Library, aside from the Teen Room, I do believe using music streamers is great. Plus, it is free (if you want it to be.)!

Google Docs is alright. I suppose if you did not have Microsoft Office for your computer, this would be a helpful tool. I believe, however, the library does have all the office products to use.

I decided to search for the Allen Public Library. I have never been there but I often go to the skatepark with my boyfriend and the library is literally 3 minutes away. The building looks really neat and I always like to see how other libraries operate.

I honestly never use Google Maps... I prefer MapQuest.

I have actually used TinyURL before a while ago. It is really convenient if you are sending a link to someone via social network or email. (or if you are sending a Christmas gift idea to someone ;) haha)

I have not used YouSendIt but it looks really simple to use. If I ever need to send a large file, I would try it out.

I hate to admit but Facebook is an excellent network for communication. Since everyone and their mother uses Facebook, it is an easy tool to spread the word about something. The fact that you can post something and someone can "share" it on their wall, exposes it to a greater amount of people. I know, at school, a lot of student organizations use Facebook to get the word out about events. I could see Facebook as a very useful tool for the library to use. Hours, holiday closing, upcoming story-times, new system & instructions (because people still ask question)... there is a lot of information the FPL could put on a Facebook page.

LinkedIn is okay. My dad showed me it a long time ago and told me how it is the social networking for professionals and whatnot. It did not seem like there was a lot to do if you were not a premium member. I made a profile but I doubt I will use it... I did, however, find my dad on it :).

LibraryThing is actually pretty cool. It will take me a little bit to get use to it but it seems really neat. When you search a book, it tells you how many other members have that book in their query.  It's like a social network for nerds :P. Haha, I would totally use this at my house.

I really am not a fan of this website. I did not find it user-friendly. I like to just know exactly what I have to do... kind of like the Facebook main page... you only have two options, sign in or fill out the information to make an account. There was so much going on the main page that I didn't even see the "join now" in the top right corner.  I do bookmark a lot of articles on my personal computer especially if there is an interesting article I want to read but am too busy to do it at that moment.

I really hate when people tag me in pictures, especially if they are terrible, which is usually the case. I hardly ever tag people or things on Facebook, or any other social network I use. I mean, I don't think tagging is necessarily a bad thing, I just don't ever use it.

Instant messaging has been around forever. I downloaded AIM (AOL instant messaging) when I was in fifth grade because my aunt and cousin had it, who were much older than me. I actually still remember my username... it was ldybg36, short for lady bug. Haha. I honestly don't know why I would have picked that because I hate all bugs. But anyways, instant messaging has always been a great way to communicate with friends or family far away. I do not think instant messaging would be an efficient way for the library to communicate with patrons though.
